VMB-613 "SEMPER FIDELIS" AWARDS PROGRAM
The following terms are defined to assist applicants in understanding the submission criteria within the scope of the VMB-613 "Semper Fidelis" Awards Program. These definitions serve only for the purposes of this program and is in no way intended or implied to serve as technical or legal definitions:
Bandwidth. The amount of data transferred from a website to a user's computer when a file is opened or displayed.
Bandwidth Theft. Also known as "hot-linking," bandwidth theft is the use of an html tag or script to display a image, audio, or video file that is not located on your website's server. The intent is to make the file appear on your own site without using bandwidth you have been authorized to use.
Browser Traps. Scripts or codes designed to make it difficult for a visitor to leave a website. Common techniques include disabling the browser's "back" button, and causing new and often multiple windows to open when one is closed.
Copyright Infringement. A violation of the statutory or common law rights of authors, artists, or developers to publish their works and to prevent others from the unauthorized or unlicensed copying of that work. This includes the use of musical compositions and graphics without properly cited permission.
Dead Link. A link that does not point to a valid page resulting in a error message when attempts are made to display it in a browser. This includes internal links (those on the website that is being evaluated), and external links (those to another website).
Downloading Time. The length of time it takes to transfer a file from a website's server to the viewer's browser -- in the case of this program, using a standard 56K modem.
Excessive. Greater than a normal or reasonable amount. As this is a purely subjective term, each member of the VMB-613 Awards Board reserves the right to determine what is normal and reasonable.
False Certification. An untrue statement by words or graphic images which indicate or imply validity to a standard, or to a designation that was granted, conferred, or awarded.
False Membership Claim. An untrue statement by words or graphic images which indicate or imply belonging to an organization.
Missing File. An error in the coding or the absence of an image, audio, or video file on a website that prevents the file from being displayed or from functioning as intended.
Offensive. Causing anger, resentment, or displeasure. Each member of the VMB-613 Awards Board reserves the right to determine their respective metric regarding this term. However, all items which bring discredit on, or tarnish the public's image of the United States Marine Corps, the naval service, or the United States of America will be considered to be offensive.
Plagiarism. Claiming, or attempting to claim, credit for another person's words, information, research, or findings -- the intent being, to make someone else's work appear to be your own.
Pornographic. Material such as books and photographs that depict erotic behavior or acts which, by virtue of the lack of serious literary, artistic, or scientific value, is intended to cause sexual arousal.
Popup Advertisement. A online announcement designed to generate sales or patronage which opens in a new window, often causing the viewer to take action to close it in order to view the website's content.
