Likiep Atoll
– Located 112 nautical miles northeast of Kwajalein, Likiep Atoll was
never occupied by the Japanese. Although it is a sizable atoll
consisting of 65 islands, its shallow lagoon made it impractical to
serve as a harbor for large ships. The Marshallese on Likiep Atoll
enjoyed a peaceful existence throughout the war. However, due to its
close proximity to the Japanese-occupied Wotje Atoll, VMB-613 maintained
constant surveillance on Likiep Atoll to ensure it remained free of
Japanese activity.
