Extensive cratering
of the Japanese airstrip on Mille Island is clearly evident in this
strike photograph. As the second largest atoll in the Marshall
Islands, Mille Island was heavily defended. VMB-613 began
daily night harassing missions against Mille during June 1945. Following the
war, the
U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey (USSBS) discovered that 22 of Mille
Island's 122 anti-aircraft guns were still operational. Less than
half of Mille's 5,100 man garrison survived.
