To meet the need for long-range patrol bombers, the Navy requested Consolidated B-24s from the USAAF.  The Navy received a total of 977 of these aircraft, designating them as PB4Y-1s.  These aircraft had a range of 2,850 miles and were capable of carrying an 8,000 pound bomb load.
